Paint Shop Pro Tutorials -- EZ Beveled Text
Creating EZ Beveled Text with Paint Shop Pro
Here's a trick I don't think you'll find anywhere else. I came across this one, as I do sometimes, by just playing around with the program. I was experimenting with overall opacity levels and the "Hot Wax" special effect when this result popped up. :)
This is a quick and easy way to get a beveled look to your text in PSP 4.x.
First, open a new graphic with a white background and 16.7 million colors. I used 300x50. Use the text tool to enter some text using a fairly dark color. I used a dark blue with R: 1, G: 18, B: 215.
figure 7.1
Before you de-select the text use "SELECTIONS">>"MODIFY">>"OVERALL OPACITY" and, in the selection opacity window, set the Overall opacity percentage to 20%.
De-select the text. It should look like this:
figure 7.2
A former shadow of itself.
Set the foreground to a lighter shade of blue. I used R:149, G: 240, B: 240.
Select "IMAGE">>"SPECIAL EFFECTS">>"HOT WAX COATING". The result should be raised text like this:
figure 7.3
If you want the graphic to retain the background color you started with, in this case white, select the color replacer tool.
Make sure that the background color is set to the color you want (I used white because this is the color I started out with).
Move the pointer over the background area in your graphic and double-click the right mouse button:

Voila! Nifty, eh?
You could try selecting the background, using the magic wand, and then select "SELECTIONS">>"INVERT" to select the text. Now that you've got the text selected you could, for example, add a drop shadow.
Use "IMAGE">>"SPECIAL EFFECTS">>"DROP SHADOW":

Now, if you're really ambitious, you could select the retouch tool and get rid of the jaggies around the areas of the text that overlay the shadow. I used the following settings: Retouch Mode: Soften, Size: 2, Shape: Round, Opacity: 35 and Paper Texture: None, to get this final result:
